Omar Todd’s career path has varied widely over the course of his life so far. From humble beginnings in IT to environmental social media work, he has transitioned to becoming a director, screenwriter and producer. The moves have the combined effect of showing the expansive reach of social media and the ways that good causes and established industries such as film can intersect.

For twenty years, Omar Todd worked in Information Technology earning titles such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Security manager (CISM). He also served as a contractor for Microsoft and Telstra Corporation in the 1990s before becoming CEO of Premier Ltd. He was responsible for the largest Cisco Systems and Sun Microsystems before serving as Managing Director of Union Roth Capital Pty Ltd, a service specializing in venture capital and consultancy.

Todd also volunteered and continues to do so at the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, assisting in social media, public relations, technology, and ship communications. Under his guidance, the nonprofit has developed a following numbering two million people supporting the organization’s anti-whaling and general helping of marine life goals.

One way he did this was by recording on his Twitter account how the Red Hot Chili Peppers were involved with Sea Shepherd at the Big Day Out music festival in Australia. Similarly, he serves as a member and director of The Blue Seals, a marine conservation and stewardship awareness and promotion organization. The instant views on the posts will attract the attention of the general public. Proper awareness and promotion will be among the public through the views on the stories of the person.

Todd’s ecological work allowed him to transition to a starring role as himself on the Animal Planet television series “Whale Wars,” supporting his anti-whaling efforts from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. His team has successfully stalled whaling operations and brought tremendous awareness to the issue through the program, the organization, and his social media efforts.

Currently, Todd is also a producer at Cinemagine Screen Entertainment. There, he’s had a hand in such films as “Sparks and Ember” and “Waiting for Gorgo” which received the Special Jury Prize at the 2012 KAN Festival and won the Best Short Film at the 2011 Cantoo Film Festival. But it was the documentary “Confessions of an Eco-Terrorist” which tied into his environmental efforts, showcasing a fleet of sea vessels that endeavor to stop illegal whalers, sea hunters and drift-netters by ramming into them. In this way, Todd’s altruistic work connects directly with his work in film.

His current production slate includes independent comedy “Barflies,” supernatural thriller “The Circle,” science fiction thriller “Emissary,” and action thriller “Tropic of Capricorn.” His work has earned him spots at the 2011 and 2012 Cannes Film Festivals as well as a position in the Cannes’ Producer’s Network. He achieved all of this while coordinating fundraising events for Sea Shepherd, such as one that featured actress Michelle Rodriguez.

Todd’s multifaceted career illustrates the way social media today bridges multiple industries and demonstrates effective use of new outlets for environmental concerns and altruistic endeavors in general. The most exciting thing will be seeing what Todd does next.
