There are literally thousands of weight loss programs, products, and gimmicks on the market and trying to wade through the truth and the hype can be overwhelming. Before you get lost in the information overload, take a bit of time and consider the basics of weight loss and what will help you to lose weight and keep it off.
It all starts with calories. Our bodies are like an engine that needs fuel and that fuel comes from calories. Everything we do from getting out of bed in the morning, walking, exercising, sitting, and even sleeping, burns calories. But, if we consume more calories than we burn, our bodies store the excess as fat. The body does this as a defense mechanism – just in case we don’t have enough to eat it can then use the stored fat as energy. Since we continue to feed our body, all the excess calories we take in simply get stored as fat.
Many of the foods that we eat today are high in calories – much more than we actually need. Fried foods and foods that are high in corn syrup are just two examples. Sure, the foods taste good but our bodies really don’t need all those extra calories. So, the most basic way to control your weight or lose weight is to balance your calorie intake.
Changing the way you eat is the easiest way to control the calories you consume. Eating healthier foods and avoiding processed and fast-foods can go a long way in helping you to shed the pounds and keep them off. Add more fruits, vegetables, lean protein, fish, and whole grains to your diet and skip the potato chips.
Eating five or six smaller healthy meals a day rather than three large meals can help keep your blood sugar regulated and can also help to reduce cravings. If you feel the urge to snack in between meals, reach for healthy snack like light yogurt, a small banana, or even a few small pieces of dark chocolate. Just be sure not to go overboard on the chocolate!
Exercising is a great way to burn off excess calories. This doesn’t mean you have to join a gym and work out for hours on end. You can simply take a walk every day or ride a bike. If you’re not used to exercising, start out with a short walk and increase it a bit every day. Grab your camera and make your walk interesting by snapping pictures along the way. It’ll make is seem a lot less like exercise and a lot more like fun.
In the end it’s very simple; it all boils down to balancing your calorie intake and burning more calories than you take in. Eat healthy meals and snacks, get some exercise, and you will be on your way to taking off the weight. If you think it’s easier said than done, then challenge yourself for one month and see the results for yourself.
